![]() This is also a book about racism, and the unconscionable levels of racist violence and oppression in this country, on which this country was founded, and which is woven into every single system of power, including the education system. Laymon highlights moments in which certain concepts or words entered his vocabulary, the phases in which he became proficient at writing about various parts of his experience. His mother (a professor at Jackson State University working towards her PhD through most of childhood) assigned him reading and essays on top of his normal school work, edited his pieces, and impressed on him the importance of writing, re-writing, re-reading, revising. This book is also about Laymon's education as a writer, reader, and thinker. As Laymon asks near the end of the book, "Can we just not lie?" ![]() It feels trite to call these introspections honest or raw or hard-won, though they are those things. He writes of a gambling addiction and other self-sabotage. He includes experiences of physical and sexual abuse, as well other body-related traumas such as eating disorders. Kiese Laymon writes about growing up Black and poor in Mississippi, raised by his Grandma and his single mom, to whom the book is addressed in the second person. It's so good I ended up giving up on another book I was also reading, because it paled in comparison. This is a book I want to own, so I can underline passages. But I really liked the relationships Kiera had with Cicada and with her sister, and I was very pleased with the book's ending. ![]() Some of the high school friend/boyfriend drama felt a little clunky, mainly because it was often a distraction from the main narrative of game situation. The chapters that briefly showed various diverse SLAY player's POVs added a lot. This book is a fast and fun read, and I liked how the story unfolded over a very short period of time. When a SLAY player in Kansas City is murdered over trying to sell in-game items for actual money, SLAY is suddenly a hot media topic and Kiera and her co-moderator Cicada (a Black college student in Paris whom Kiera has never met IRL) must figure out how to handle the new and scary outside pressures on their previously safe and hidden world. She has poured her heart and soul into building SLAY as a fantasy world exclusively for Black gamers to play free of harassment, but she's never told her younger sister, her parents, her boyfriend Malcolm or her white best friend Harper about her creation. Kiera is one of very few Black students at her private high school in Bellevue, Washington, and on top of the normal pressures of keeping up in her honors classes and applying to colleges she is also the secret developer of a multiplayer online role-playing card game, SLAY.

![]() But October, the complete lack of enthusiasm for his campaign having caused his grassroots fundraising to collapse to virtual non-existence, he reversed course and accepted super PAC support, which was immediately forthcoming. Early in the campaign, Biden was trying to draw some of the progressive reform mojo from Sanders and opposed support for his campaign by super PACs. Then, within 48 hours - after there was some pushback - he was opposed to it again. A couple weeks later, he was suddenly for it again, insisting that his earlier comments in opposition to it were a result of his having misunderstood the question he’d been asked. Then, in May, he suddenly announced he was opposed to it. For more than four decades, Biden has been been an unshakeable supporter of the Hyde Amendment, which bars federal funds from being used for abortions. Now that black voters are an important constituency for anyone pursuing the Democratic nomination, Biden says that policy was “a big mistake.” And an example of systemic racism! In July, Biden released a criminal justice “plan.” His suggested criminal justice policy? Reverse the “criminal justice” policies he’s spent his entire political career supporting. He authored the 100-to-1 crack/powdered cocaine sentencing disparity that targeted the black community. Sometimes both.īiden spent a lot of his career trying to out-”tough” Republicans on crime, leading to, among other things, the mass-incarceration epidemic that has plagued the U.S. The sharp division between Biden’s record and where the voters in his party are has led Biden to spend much of his latest presidential campaign either repudiating most of what he has done in the course of his career or lying about it in an effort to make it seem more palatable. He has also been a leader on many issues but all of them - gutting bankruptcy protections for creditor on behalf of the financial services industry, pimping the Iraq war, pushing “tough on crime” policies that obliterate civil liberties, etc. ![]() He tries - badly - to fake all sorts of passion at times but there’s no core to him his entire political history is one of a conservative who walks away from such views only if and only when they become politically risky within the Democratic party, and when he judges flip-flopping is safe. As I wrote in a recent editorial, Biden “offers for policy only a string of thin, half-baked and generally very bad ideas slapped together by his underlings that he may say he has something and that are clearly as much a mystery to him as to everyone else.” None of them are serious, and he isn’t serious about any of them.īiden’s contempt for policy is rooted in the fact that he’s an essentially conservative opportunist in a progressive party. It is, of course, impossible to run for president without any policy proposals - what else is a candidate to even talk about or run on? - so Biden eventually put his underlings to work creating proposals he could present as his own. When Biden entered the current campaign, he had no policies at all, presenting his run, instead, as part of “a battle for the soul of this nation.” The notion that these and every other such movement haven’t had pretty extensive legislative agendas is, of course, absurd but these and other such comments establish Biden’s dismissive view of policy. He went on to further denigrate policy and to suggest that what’s needed instead is leadership, something that, in a political context, is impossible to detach from policy but something he apparently considers to be entirely divorced from it. ![]() When the women’s movement started, it did not move with a constitutional amendment. It seems to me that when we got involved in the civil rights movement, Frank, nobody asked Martin Luther King what his legislative agenda was. “e have never, as a party, moved this nation by 14-point position papers and 9-point programs. On another occasion, he got into an ugly exchange with a questioner and went on a rant against policy: And we changed attitudes.” Actually, Biden never marched in the civil rights movement, not to enact policy, not to change attitudes, not for any reason. I marched with tens of thousands of others to change attitudes. “I did not march with a 12-point program. “When I marched in the civil rights movement,” he told a New Hampshire audience in February 1987. In trying to explain that record, biographers of Biden’s political career will struggle in vain to find any other through-line.īiden has often voiced a disdain for policy. It’s just that, throughout his career, his policy concerns have always been dictated by self-interest and, most especially, serving the needs of his big donors. This is not to say Biden doesn’t have a very long policy record. ![]() With a strong foundation and a clear vision, Oryen is poised to take over the top spot from BitTorrent (BTT), Basic Attention Token (BAT), and Stepn (GMT).ĭisclaimer: This is a paid release. Schuessler correlates it with a DJ spinning bits of old songs to create a beat or an entirely new song, as opposed to just a remix of a familiar song. ![]() In an article, Jennifer Schuessler writes, "The machine, Brown argued, would allow readers to adjust the type size, avoid paper cuts and save trees, all while hastening the day when words could be 'recorded directly on the palpitating ether.'" Brown believed that the e-reader (and his notions for changing text itself) would bring a completely new life to reading. Later e-readers never followed a model at all like Brown's however, he correctly predicted the miniaturization and portability of e-readers. In his book, Brown says movies have outmaneuvered the book by creating the "talkies" and, as a result, reading should find a new medium:Ī simple reading machine which I can carry or move around, attach to any old electric light plug and read hundred-thousand-word novels in 10 minutes if I want to, and I want to.īrown's notion, however, was much more focused on reforming orthography and vocabulary, than on medium ("It is time to pull out the stopper" and begin "a bloody revolution of the word."): introducing huge numbers of portmanteau symbols to replace normal words, and punctuation to simulate action or movement so it is not clear whether this fits into the history of "e-books" or not. He titled it The Readies, playing off the idea of the "talkie". Some trace the concept of an e-reader, a device that would enable the user to view books on a screen, to a 1930 manifesto by Bob Brown, written after watching his first " talkie" (movie with sound). With print books, readers are increasingly browsing through images of the covers of books on publisher or bookstore websites and selecting and ordering titles online the paper books are then delivered to the reader by mail or another delivery service. In the 2000s, there was a trend of print and e-book sales moving to the Internet, where readers buy traditional paper books and e-books on websites using e-commerce systems. Turing’s most notable work today is as a computer scientist. The father of the computer also dabbled in physics, biology, chemistry and neurology It was based on plans for a larger computer (the ACE) designed by the mathematician Alan Turing between 19. Science was a considered a second-class pursuit in English public schools in the 1920s, Hodges said. Though Turing joined the Anti-War Movement in 1933, he never got deeply involved in politics. He also shared the left-leaning views of many of his Kings College compatriots, who included economists John Maynard Keynes and Arthur Cecil Pigou. With his youthful face, he was often mistaken for an undergraduate even in his 30s. It wasn’t uncommon to see Turing dressed rather shabbily, with bitten nails and without a tie, he said. “He was very casual in those days, and thought very scruffy.” Had he lived a few decades later, he would have worn t-shirts and jeans every day, Hodges added. “He was a hippie before his time,” Hodges said. He embodied some values of the Hippie movement When one of his running club members asked why he trained so vehemently, he replied, “I have such a stressful job that the only way I can get it out of my mind is by running hard.” 2.
